Dear Readers,
The big question on everyone’s mind right now is whether or not the Monkees are breaking up. If you got past page three without having that question answered, better turn back and check again. Of course the Monkees AREN’T breaking up. And no one could be gladder than I am. In fact, it seems to me that they are working better together and happier than they’ve been in a long, long time.
Love, Ann Moses
Q. I saw the Monkees on TV a few weeks ago and I would like to know: 1. Were the Monkees really in Paris and 2. Who were the girls in the show?
A. The Monkees filmed the show in Paris in June of 1967. They spent three days there filming before traveling to England for concerts in London. The girls used for that show were French actresses.
Q. Our local newspaper stated that The Monkees television show will be taken off the air at the end of the season. Is this true? If it is, is there anything we can do to get the show back on?
A. At this writing, things are still officially undecided. NBC wants the Monkees and the Monkees want to be on TV, but the problem is “in what way?” ABC-TV is also bidding for the Monkees. The Monkees hope to do three one-hour specials next year instead of their series, which they feel is getting “tired.” Until all final decisions have been made, there is nothing anyone can do except hope. You can be sure when everything is decided you’ll read about it first in Monkee Spectacular and Tiger Beat!
Q. This may sound like an odd request, but could you please print the address of Screen Gems? Thank you very much.
A. The address of Screen Gems is 1334 Beachwood Drive, Hollywood, California, 90028. This is the best place to write the Monkees because they receive all their mail at that address.
Q. I read in Monkee Spectacular #10 about Micky’s father whose name is Doctor Robert Scott. Now I know Micky’s name is Micky Dolenz. So is Micky’s name a name he uses just on the TV show?
A. Micky was named after his father—George Michael Dolenz, who passed away several years ago. Dr. Robert Scott is Micky’s stepfather.
Q. A girl in my class said she an article in Life magazine that all of the Monkees except Mike took drugs. Although we are very avid fans of theirs we would like to know the truth.
A. This is totally untrue and Life magazines are on file at all public libraries, so why not ask your friend to show you where it said such a thing. I think she’ll have a hard time coming up with proof.
Q. I thought the Monkees show in Paris was groovy. But I noticed one thing—the cars were on the right. I always thought in Europe they drove on the left side instead of the right as in America. Please straighten me out!
A. I was under the same impression until I went to Europe last summer. The majority of the countries in Europe now drive on the right side. France is one of these. England, however, still drives on the left side of the street.
Q. I heard a rumor that Phyllis Nesmith has a 13-year-old sister named Joan. Is this true? I heard that in the Barbour family there were only Mr. and Mrs. Barbour, Bruce and Phyllis.
A. Phyllis does have a sister named Joan who is 14 years old. She also has two younger brothers—Chris and Bruce. Bruce is 19 and Mike’s stand-in on the Monkee set.
Q. I have a question for you to answer for me. On several Monkee cards I have seen this: “Davy and The Monkees…” I have also heard this on the radio. Is Davy being made leader, or is he already? I have read in many magazines that the Monkees definitely do not have a leader. What is the truth about this?
A. There is no leader within the Monkees. They each make up a very important one-fourth, but no one person has more influence than another.
Q. I read in a magazine that Paul McCartney of the Beatles lives on Clumber Road in England. I also read that Davy Jones’ father lives on the same street. Is this so? If it is, are they next door neighbors or what?
A. They do not live on the same street. Davy’s father lives in the north of England, while Paul McCartney lives in St. John’s Wood in London.
Q. Is it true that Davy Jones steady dates a girl named Linda who is 5'6" tall and has long blonde hair?
A. Once again I will state—Davy is not going steady with any one girl. Linda, who is 5'6" and has long blonde hair, dated Davy for several months before she left for Hawaii, where she now lives. She is still designing clothes for some shops Davy is planning to open in Hollywood and surrounding areas in the near future.
Q. I would love to have a picture of the moog synthesizer. Could you print one?
A. Sure. You can see the moog synthesizer pictured on this page.
Q. In all the papers they say that the Monkees are having terrible arguments and that they’re going to break up. Is it true?
A. This is definitely not true. After a two month vacation from filming over the Christmas holidays, the Monkees returned to Screen Gems eager to make their first movie the greatest ever. I have never seen them work together so beautifully as they have on the film and with such enthusiasm.
Q. On page 9 of the magazine “Tiger Beat presents Davy Jones” there is a picture of Davy on his bed playing with an animal. My girlfriend says it’s his dog and I say it’s his cat. Would you please tell us which one is correct?
A. Your girlfriend is correct. The dog pictured in Davy’s book was Susie I, the dog that was stolen from Davy’s home. He has since purchased another German Shepard who he named “Susie II,’ even though it’s a male dog!
