I Visit with The Monkees (Part 19)

Dear TiGER BEAT Readers,

So you want to know what the Monkees’ movie is all about? Well, don’t ask me, I don’t know. Don’t ask the Monkees, because they’re not even sure. We know something is happening here, Mr. Jones, but we admit we don’t know what it is.

Bits and pieces I can tell you—the movie opens with one of the Monkees committing suicide! Mike Nesmith says it’s not a comedy, but it will be funny! And there’s hardly any dialogue to the script, which director Bob Rafelson says is really a trip!

Some of the guest stars you’ll see are Annette (who tries to talk Davy out of going into the boxing ring), Sonny Liston (who beats Davy up badly in the ring), T.C. Jones (a female impersonator that gets a punch from Peter), veteran actor Victor Mature (who hits an exploding golf ball and part of the story concerns his hair) and San Francisco’s topless queen Carol Doda (who is sarcastically called Sally Silicone in the film)!

Like Bob Rafelson said, it’s really going to be a trippy film—and I can’t wait to see it!

Love, Ann

Info My first morning on the movie set was so exciting, but I left the studio that evening very confused. It’s impossible to figure out the plots.

  • Peter Tork, Davy Jones
Info Davy helped teach Peter how to throw a “stage punch”—one that looks very real but doesn’t hurt or even touch the other person.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Ace (T.C. Jones), Peter Tork
Info Pete was a fast learner as you can see him try out his new skill on T.C. Jones, [above].

Info In these photos you can get an idea of the many different costumes the Monkees wear during their film. They even play different roles, like Davy, [above], who’s dressed as a girl. What I’m wondering is—is he supposed to be Peter’s date?

Info While the Monkees wait between shots, they often play around like Peter and Davy, above. They were playing with a prop gun of Mike’s. A funny note: they don’t change clothes when they leave for lunch. Can you imagine seeing Peter on Sunset Blvd. in his sultan robes? Weird.
  • Peter Fonda, Micky Dolenz
Info Peter Fonda was a set visitor not long ago. He and Micky and Peter spent an hour together before the boys had to film again.
  • Micky Dolenz, The Jumper (June Fairchild), Mike Nesmith
Info [Above], Mike rehearses with one of the actresses in the movie, while Micky lends advice.

Info Some fans might panic and think the Monkees have been drafted with a quick look at these photos, but it’s just another scene in the flick.

  • Private One (Ray Nitschke), Peter Tork
Info [Above], Peter shows his appreciation to Green Bay Packers’ all pro linebacker, Ray Nitschke, who does a guest spot in the movie. I’m not sure if this particular shot is part of the film, though.
