I Visit with The Monkees (Part 19)

Dear TIGER BEAT Readers,

There were many mad-cap moments on the set of the Monkees’ “Untitled” movie before they finished filming in May. The four boys returned to the California desert for more shots there, they filmed some football scenes at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and then it was back to the Columbia Ranch in Burbank.

At the Ranch they filmed some western set shots and some unbelievable underwater scenes! Luckily it was a warm and sunny Spring day when they got to do the swimming shots. The final days of shooting were spent doing some flying sequences a la “The Flying Nun.” For this the Monkees had to have special costumes made so the heavy harnesses that make them “fly” would fit underneath.

As soon as the movie was finished, Davy took off for England to see his family and to appear on Lulu’s TV show. Micky put all his free-time efforts into finishing up the remodeling on his house and Mike and Peter spent many hours catching up on sleep.

This long-awaited film should be out in August. And all we can say is “DON’T MISS IT!”

Love, Ann

  • Mike Nesmith
Info Mike really looks at home in the neat western gear he wears in the film. Be sure to notice when you see the flick—Mike never wears the wool hat which was so much a part of his personality when he first became popular.
  • Micky Dolenz, Mike Nesmith, Ann Moses
Info [Above], Mike enjoys listening to an interview we just did on my tape recorder.
  • Micky Dolenz
Info Micky makes a face for the close-up camera.
  • Davy Jones, Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork, Micky Dolenz
Info [Above] the Monkees look as if they’re trying to get away from something. But with all their clothes on?
  • Mike Nesmith, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork
Info These underwater scenes should really look spectacular on color film. First they filmed the boys splashing down into the water by shooting through a big glass window built into the pool. Then they followed each one individually with a special camera to get the close-up shots.
  • Peter Tork
Info Another part of the days’ shooting meant bouncing on a set of foam rubber cushions, much like a trampoline. Mike had the most trouble, he said, because he doesn’t like outdoor sports.
  • Micky Dolenz
    Info
  • Mike Nesmith, Sally Silicone (Carol Doda)
Info Sally Silicone as San Francisco’s topless queen, Carol Doda, is called in the film is seen with Mike. She does a part in the boxing sequence.
  • Davy Jones
Info Can you believe that’s Davy, above? I hope this scene, where Davy gets badly beaten up by Sonny Liston in the boxing ring, won’t be too upsetting for devoted fans! Keep in mind that he wasn’t really hurt.
  • Sally Silicone (Carol Doda)
    Info
  • Davy Jones, The Critic (Frank Zappa)
Info Another way-out guest star is Frank Zappa, leader of the Mothers of Invention, seen with Davy and the cow, above.
  • Teresa (Annette Funicello), Davy Jones
Info [Above], you can see Annette as she appears in scene with Davy where she pleads with him not to go into ring.
  • Davy Jones
    Info
  • Pat Boone, Peter Tork
Info [Above], an unusual set guest was Pat Boone and his two youngest daughters who are great Monkee fans. Pat and his children visited the set the day Davy and Peter worked on these haunted house scenes you see here!

    Info
  • Mike Nesmith, Lulu
Info Lovely Lulu was Davy’s guest for a day watching the shooting. She already knew all the Monkees from when she played on their London concerts. For the special day, Lulu chose to wear a groovy black midi-dress with a matching black fur midi-coat.
